"This is truly a heartwarming book that would make a perfect gift—while it’s written about one child and his grandmother, the lessons can be applied to anyone. On every page, a feeling of warmth and gratitude emanates from Wong’s words, and Smolenceva’s illustrations flow effectively with the text. For example, when Charlie asks his grandma how he can be his best, she responds, “it’s even better to be the best ‘for’ the world”; the accompanying illustration captures them freeing a turtle from litter and picking up trash from the beach. The beauty of the narrative is revealed in its simple, ordinary moments of connection that all readers can identify with and cherish (when Charlie roller skates and takes a spill, he asks, “What is success, Grandma?” She answers, “Success is picking yourself back up every time you fall”). Most of the images are black and white, with small pops of color sprinkled throughout, and Smolenceva punctuates those with a handful of kaleidoscopic watercolor spreads that enchant, showing Charlie and his grandmother riding bicycles by the water, practicing sunset yoga on the beach, and flying a kite.

Truly wonderful! That’s the best way of describing this sweetly written picture book from the pen of talented writer, Michael Wong. Accessibly written, and helped along by the amazing drawings of Eugene Smolenceva, it’s the story of a boy visiting his grandma, and the excellent nuggets of wisdom she imparts to him.

So if you are looking for a book which will help a young child to understand his/her worth, to dream BIG, to work hard, and to understand the importance of the ‘journey’, this book is for you. I think readers will also love the illustrations; they are, to put it mildly, sublime – and add much to the text.

All in all, this is the perfect present for a grandparent and the perfect present for a child too.
